Best dog bed for large dogs
If you’ve got a big dog, then you’ll need a big dog bed to match. When it comes to choosing the right bed for your colossal canine, there are lots of things to think about – just as there would be if you were buying one for yourself
Finding the best solution isn’t just about keeping your dog nice and comfortable, it’s also about providing the right level of support in all the right places, to make sure they don’t develop problems. You should look at it as an investment in your dog’s health and well-being, so it’s important to get it right.
With all this in mind, here are a few things you should be looking for in a dog bed for your big pooch…
Get the right size
No matter what size your dog is, they need a bed that’s large enough for them to move around without feeling restricted. The same goes for larger dogs. A bed needs to large enough to accommodate them when they’re sprawled out. Even if you think your companion prefers to curl up in their bed, they can easily end up in a sprawling position while they sleep, so they need a bed that supports their hips and shoulders no matter how they’re lying down.
Choose memory foam
Having a bigger dog also means having a heavier dog. This extra weight can lead to an increased chance of developing orthopaedic problems, including dysplasia of the hips or elbow, arthritis and ligament tears.
This means that the filling in a dog bed needs to offer the right level of joint support, and memory foam is the perfect solution. Good quality memory foam will mould to the individual shape of their body, and despite their weight, they won’t be able to feel the floor through it. What’s more, it also provides good insulation, so you know they’ll stay warm and cosy.
Remember – even though orthopaedic problems don’t tend to be an issue when your four-legged friend is young, fit and active, as they get older these issues are much more likely to develop. It’s really important to do everything you can to minimise the chances of problems developing, and choosing the right dog bed is part and parcel of this process.
Go for tough fibres
The best beds are made of tougher fibres, and this is a particularly handy feature when you’ve got a bigger dog to take care of. After all, the bigger the animal, the larger the teeth! So they’ll need a bed that can handle daily wear and tear, and can cope with being chewed by powerful jaws.
Look for hardwearing fabric covers that are built to last. Tight-weave structures and heavy duty stitching are exactly what you need. That way, you won’t have to worry about the bed snagging, tearing apart, or wearing out completely.
Make it washable and water-resistant
Having a big dog means that’s there’s potential for even more mess. But choosing the right dog bed can minimise the amount of work you have to do to keep everything clean.
Being able to wash bedding is absolutely crucial if you want to keep a dog bed clean, fresh and in tip-top condition, so look out for one with removable, machine-washable covers. Covers that you can wash at high temperatures means you can get rid of lingering smells or tough-to-clean marks.
To make your life even easier, waterproof layers are a great choice – especially if your four-legged friend often goes out in the rain and likes to get muddy.
